AC Milan are reportedly planning a transfer attempt to sign Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Mousa Dembele. The Belgium international is being eyed as a potential replacement for Hakan Calhanoglu, who has failed to live up to his expectations this term.
In the injury absence of Victor Wanyama, Dembele has struggled to command from the heart of the midfield, and he has found himself benched in place of Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko in a number of games this campaign. Dembele currently has just 18 months left on his Spurs contract, and the club could potentially sanction his sale at the end of the season, where they can push for a replacement. Ideally, Eric Dier would be a certain candidate to participate in midfield, but an injury to Toby Alderweireld has pushed him in a central defensive role.
The Rossoneri hit the headlines earlier in the summer where their big spending saw as many as 11 players join the club. Despite this, they have fallen well short of their quest for Champions League football, and they are currently 14 points adrift of fourth-placed AS Roma, who have an additional game in hand. Meanwhile, the club have also seen managerial changes in this period with Vincenzo Montella getting the sack while his successor Gennaro Gattuso faces a tricky situation after registering just a solitary point against relegation candidates Benevento and Hellas Verona.
Winning the Europa League offers another route for the Rossoneri to reach the elite competition, but the club have a stiff task on their hands with the likes of Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, and Napoli in the mix to lift the trophy.
